I’ve authored numerous articles discussing solo travel for women and emphasizing the importance of women embarking on solo journeys. However, a common inquiry I receive is, “Where is it safe for women to travel alone? What are the recommended destinations for solo trips?”
While certain destinations may boast higher safety levels than others, it’s crucial to recognize that the world isn’t as intimidating as some might perceive. With a positive mindset and basic street smarts, there are numerous solo travel options worldwide where women can experience a sense of safety and security on their independent adventures.
Travel to: Iceland
If there’s a country tailor-made for solo female travelers, it’s Iceland. This compact Nordic island nation stands out as one of the safest places globally, offering ease of navigation and a wealth of incredible adventures.
Despite its formidable nickname, “The Land of Fire & Ice,” solo travel in Iceland is both comfortable and straightforward. The city of Reykjavik, renowned for its vibrant music scene and nightlife, ensures that connecting with locals and fellow travelers is effortlessly enjoyable.
Iceland’s allure extends far beyond its safety, with its natural beauty taking center stage. Engage in an exhilarating tour to snorkel or dive in the Silfra Fissure, embark on a glacier hike, and indulge in a rejuvenating soak at the stunning Blue Lagoon—just a few compelling reasons to explore this captivating destination.
Travel to: Switzerland
With breathtaking mountain vistas, endless meadows adorned with vibrant wildflowers, and the picturesque backdrop of the Rhône River, Switzerland stands out as one of the world’s most scenic countries.
For winter enthusiasts, a visit to the Swiss Alps and Interlaken is a must, while Bern captivates with its stunning architecture, making it a noteworthy destination for those enamored with timeless beauty.
During a summer escapade through Europe, Geneva left a lasting impression as one of my favorite spots. Offering access to the lakeshore, the iconic Jet d’Eau, Parc de la Grange, and more, it provides the perfect immersion into Swiss culture.
Switzerland consistently ranks among the top 10 safest countries globally. While violent crime is exceptionally rare, it’s essential to stay vigilant against petty crimes like pickpocketing and occasional theft of vehicles, including bikes, particularly in larger cities.
With that in mind, Switzerland is tailor-made for solo journeys and stands as an excellent destination for solo female travelers.
Travel to: New Zealand
Embark on an adventure amidst the glaciers, beaches, and fjords of New Zealand, where some of the world’s most stunning landscapes await exploration.
New Zealand stands out as one of the most accessible solo travel destinations, boasting excellent infrastructure, safety, and an ideal setting for outdoor enthusiasts and adventure sports lovers alike.
For those eager to connect with fellow travelers, consider joining an adventure tour or staying in one of the many hostels in New Zealand. Alternatively, if you seek a retreat from the world, renting a motorhome and embarking on a self-driving tour across the country provides an excellent opportunity.
A New Zealand road trip is a highly popular and immersive way to experience the breathtaking beauty and diverse offerings of this enchanting country.
Keep in mind that a journey to New Zealand can be costly, so it’s advisable to budget more than you initially anticipate.
Travel to: Australia
Australia boasts some of the world’s most diverse wildlife and landscapes, making it the destination for my very first solo trip abroad — now, that’s saying something!
You should also explore the bigger cities of Sydney, Melbourne, and the stunning Gold Coast, but don’t limit yourself—rent a car and hit the road.
The prevalence of English as the common language in Australia makes navigation exceptionally easy for native speakers as well!
Travel to: Canada
Almost everywhere you go in Canada, you’ll find yourself immersed in multiculturalism and treated to some of the most breathtaking landscapes your eyes have ever beheld.
Canadians are renowned for being the friendliest people globally, and as you travel alone in this country, you’ll experience firsthand why that reputation holds true!
“Given its vast size, Canada offers a plethora of hiking trails and other outdoor activities, making it a haven for adventure enthusiasts within its various national parks.”
Head to the west coast and make a stop in Vancouver, a bustling seaport that boasts a thriving art, music, and theater scene. If you’re up for something entirely different, venture to the city of Montreal.
Situated on an island in the Saint Lawrence River, Montreal’s charming narrow streets are adorned with adorable boutiques and bistros, allowing you to immerse yourself in the city’s distinctive French colonial heritage.
Travel to: French Polynesia
Featuring diverse marine life, world-class diving, extraordinary natural beauty, and a pervasive vanilla fragrance that accompanies you at every turn, the islands of French Polynesia offer a unique experience like nothing you’ve seen before.
It is undeniably breathtaking, making it a destination so memorable that you’ll yearn to return year after year. Despite the challenges in reaching this remote paradise, French Polynesia proves to be an exceptional destination for solo travel.
Travel to: Ireland
While Ireland may not be renowned for its weather, the Emerald Isle is a haven of happiness and beer. Cozy up in a local pub, catch a football game, or venture into the countryside for an authentic Irish experience.
With its lush green landscapes, Ireland offers a plethora of attractions and activities. Whether you’re planning a road trip around the country, exploring the top things to do in Dublin, visiting the Guinness Storehouse, or embarking on the Wild Atlantic Way, there’s no shortage of exciting experiences.
Is Ireland on your solo travel bucket list? For those backpacking around Europe, it stands as a fantastic solo travel destination on the continent!
Travel to: Namibia
Namibia stands out as the ultimate road trip destination, offering a fantastic experience year-round. With its vast deserts and breathtaking coastlines, it remains one of my favorite African destinations to date.
Situated in Africa’s largest conservation area, Sossusvlei is truly awe-inspiring. During my initial trip to Namibia, I spent seven remarkable days road-tripping through the country. On my second visit, I ventured to the Skeleton Coast and enjoyed a stay at Spitzkoppen Lodge!
Travel to: Japan
Exploring the Land of the Rising Sun offers an incredible experience with its captivating Japanese culture. Tokyo, in particular, stands out as a generally safe city for solo female travelers, and navigating it is made easy with the efficiency of the city’s comprehensive train system.
Additionally, Japan offers female-only train cabins, and certain hotels provide accommodations with female-only floors!
Make the most of your trip by singing your heart out at karaoke, indulging in the best culinary delights in Tokyo, or exploring the iconic Harajuku district. If you’re a devoted foodie like me, don’t miss the chance to savor these delectable local Japanese dishes.
Whether you prefer to stay in Tokyo or venture out to other parts of Japan such as Kyoto, Osaka, or Mt. Fuji, there is an abundance of sights and activities waiting to be explored.
Travel to: Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Dubai stands out as a city unlike any other on the planet. Boasting bold architecture and an extravagant style, the largest city in the United Arab Emirates is a unique blend of its Bedouin heritage and an ultra-modern culture of its own.
Dubai not only lives up to its reputation but goes above and beyond to exceed your expectations. Dive into the glitz and glam, and then delve into the ancient traditions that add depth to this multifaceted city.
Although traveling to Dubai as a woman, especially on a solo trip, may not be the initial choice for everyone, Dubai proves to be a fantastic destination for solo travel!
Violent crime is low in Dubai, and tourists generally encounter nothing worse than occasional pickpocketing. For solo female travelers, it’s crucial to be mindful of two major aspects while in the UAE: your behavior and attire in public to avoid violating local rules.
Although this might seem unusual, particularly if you’re from a Western country, it’s important to recognize and respect the differences in culture. It’s advisable to familiarize yourself with the local customs before heading to any conservative country!
